About us

Climate change and ocean degradation are not distant threats — they are daily realities for small island nations like Barbados. The Monty Hunte Foundation was established to turn global commitments into local action by advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 13: Climate Action and Goal 14: Life Below Water.

We believe that protecting our environment is inseparable from protecting our people. Rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and declining marine ecosystems threaten livelihoods, food security, and human rights. The Monty Hunte Foundation works at the intersection of climate justice, human rights, and sustainable development, ensuring that the most affected — fishers, coastal residents, women, youth, and persons with disabilities — are empowered to shape and lead the response.

Guided by the Paris Agreement, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Foundation recognizes that the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment is fundamental to the realization of all other rights. Our work integrates environmental protection with human dignity, social inclusion, and long-term resilience.

The Monty Hunte Foundation is committed to building climate knowledge and capacity among citizens and communities. Through training, research, and community engagement, we help individuals understand the science of climate change, the legal frameworks that protect their rights, and the international mechanisms that shape environmental decision-making.

By strengthening local understanding of climate science, climate finance, and environmental law, we empower vulnerable groups to participate meaningfully in the global dialogue on climate change — not as victims, but as informed advocates and equal partners. Our approach ensures that the perspectives of those living on the frontlines of climate change are represented in regional and international policy spaces.
What sets The Monty Hunte Foundation apart is its ability to translate global policy into grassroots empowerment. While climate change is often discussed in the language of diplomats and experts, we make it accessible — transforming complex concepts into practical community action.

We connect policy with people by combining legal advocacy, scientific education, and community leadership development. Whether through workshops, coastal monitoring initiatives, or partnerships with regional and international institutions, we give ordinary citizens the tools to influence extraordinary change.

At its heart, The Monty Hunte Foundation carries forward the legacy of Monty Hunte — a belief in service, empathy, and empowerment — ensuring that the fight for climate and ocean justice is not left to governments alone, but belongs to every person who depends on the land and sea for survival.
